What is Tuckpointing?

Tuckpointing Explained

Due to time and weathering, chimneys and any other brickwork exposed to the elements will need to be repaired. The first component of brickwork to go bad is usually the mortar, which is used to fill and secure the joints between bricks. It will begin to crumble away, exposing the inner parts of the bricks, which in turn will begin to crumble away.

When this starts happening, it is vital that it be rectified as soon as possible to preserve the structural integrity of the chimney or other brick structure. This repair process is called "tuckpointing."

In the tuckpointing process, the bad mortar is removed and replaced with fresh mortar, and any crumbling bricks are replaced by new, matching bricks.
